Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lychgate, Penrhos, Monmouthshire

In the SW corner of St Cadoc's churchyard in the Church in Wales Diocese of Monmouth. Derived from an old English word for a corpse, a lychgate is the roofed gateway to a churchyard, formerly used to shelter a coffin until the clergyman's arrival for the burial or pre-burial service.

This Grade II Listed early 20th century Arts and Crafts style lychgate was erected as a memorial to those killed in the 1914-18 War by volunteers said to have used old oak timbers donated by local community.
