Description

Die Abtei Neumünster befindet sich im Stadtteil Grund in Luxemburg (Stadt) am Ufer der Alzette.

Nachdem die alte Benediktinerabtei Altmünster 1542 während des Krieges zwischen Frankreich und Deutschland schwer beschädigt worden war, errichteten die Benediktinermönche 1606 ihre neue Abteikirche im Stadtteil Grund. Nach der Enteignung der Johanneskirche durch die französische Revolutionsbehörden Ende des 18. Jahrhundert richtete man in der Abtei bis 1867 ein Militärhospital ein. Im Anschluss an die Übernahme durch den Luxemburger Staat diente der Gebäudekomplex bis 1980 als Männergefängnis.

Nach größeren Restaurierungsarbeiten wurde die gesamte Anlage soziokulturellen Zwecken zugeführt und bildet heute den "Kulturtreffpunkt Neumünster".
