A Lunar Orbiter engineering back-up, located in the Space Hall at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Mapping of the Moon began with the Ranger spacecraft. They were followed up by the Surveyor program, which actually landed spacecraft on the Moon. The Lunar Orbiter craft did the high-resolution mapping just before the Apollo Moon landings. There were five Lunar Orbiters, each launched by the United States in 1966 and 1967. Their goal was to map lunar landing sites, and in doing so they mapped 99 percent of the Moon's surface. Lunar Orbiters had two lenses -- a 610 mm narrow angle high resolution (HR) lens and an 80 mm wide angle medium resolution (MR) lens. They photographed the same things, but the high-rez image (which was smaller) was exposed in the center of the mid-rez image. The film was processed on board the satellite, digitally scanned, and transmitted back to Earth. Lunar Orbiter I took the first picture of the entire Earth. This was an Earth-rise, as the Earth was just coming above the lunar horizon, and a crescent Earth could be seen. Lunar Orbiter V took the first whole image of the Earth, and in color. All the Lunar Orbiters eventually impacted on the Moon. (NASA thought that they would prevent a flight hazard to the lunar landers!) |
