s of liberty in writing to give all my dear friends athome an account of my movements, and account for my longcompulsory silence. Passing over all the long time of plots and political shiftson the part of the ex-wazir of Lahore (Lai Sing) and theCashmere rebellion, with its events and consequences, whichI have no doubt you must have long ere this seen chronicledin the Delhi Gazette much more ably than I can hope to do,I shall at once plunge in medias res, and commence my event-ful story from the date of my last communication, which Ibelieve was one I wrote at the foot of a note from Lawrenceto your address. We had before us the operation of crossing a river in theface of some 7000 hillmen, in their own mountains, wellarmed, but without guns. You may fancy my feelings onfinding myself—a griff of a lieutenant—suddenly placed inthe position of a general officer, with its accompanying re-sponsibilities, without any officer to consult, and with troopsin whose company I had never been before, except as anenemy. However, I determined to do my best for the Govern-ment, and, if possible,
