Eanjit Singh having died, the Sikhs,freed from his iron hand, refused to be controlled byhis feeble successors, and determined to measure theirstrength with the British and native soldiers of theEast India Company. They accordingly advancedtowards the British frontier, and crossed the Sutlejin December, 1845, with an army of 60,000 menand 150 guns. On the 18th December the battle ofMudki was fought, the Sikhs being defeated withheavy loss. Three days afterwards followed theclosely-contested fight of Ferozshahr. On the 22ndJanuary the Sikhs were again defeated at Aliwal,and finally, on the 10th February, the campaign wasbrought to an end by the capture and total defeatof the enemy at Sobraon. Of this last great battlewe have a stirring account in a letter from HarryLumsden to his father. Camp Lahore, 26th February, 1846.
