English: Lumsdale Valley Industrial Archaeological Site (Part of the Smithy that was adjacent to the Lower Bleach Works)
582585 : Previous -- (2 of 26) -- Next : 582620 'The Lumsdale Valley is one of the best examples of a water-powered industrial archaeological site in Great Britain. It is unusual to see such extensive use of water power in such a relatively small area. Since at least the 16th century, the Bentley brook has provided the power for a series of mills in the valley, some of which continued in industrial use until the 1930s.' - Quoted text from the Arkwright Society: http://www.arkwrightsociety.org.uk/html/lp_index.html - For more information see Peter Drabble's page here: http://freespace.virgin.net/pat.gaskell/lumsdale.html See also this photograph by Michael Patterson, 199009. |
