Now that all of the lion cubs have been placed in other zoos, the National Zoo has temporarily closed off the area by the lions for some refurbishing (the walkway and guard-rails where visitors walk and stand). However, it doesn't mean that the lions are not let out to romp around and get some exercise. And you can still see them but only if you stand off to the side near the work area. While I was watching the lions from off to the side of their enclosure, Luke (the male lion) ran across his enclosure - slightly startling the two lionesses in the process - because he had to get to the other side and rub himself in the greenery. Perhaps this is the lion equivalent of the "night crazies" all of my cats have had? All I can say is 1) Luke was pretty damned fast when he wanted to be and 2) he was a bit goofy-looking rubbing and nuzzling the greenery. |
