Deutsch: Der Sarkophag wurde 1621 in der Nähe der Porta Tiburtina in Rom gefunden und gelangte als Schenkung des Kapitels der Basilika von Santa Maria Maggiore in die Sammlung des Kardinals Ludovico Ludovisi. Die aufgenommene Frontdekoration ist in drei Ebenen dargestelltt: Die siegreichen römischen Soldaten sind zusammen mit dem als Feldherrn dargestellten Verstorbenen im oberen Drittel abgebildet. Der zentrale Teil besteht aus der eigentlichen Schlacht zwischen Römern und Barbaren. Im unteren Bereich liegen die besiegten Feinde auf dem Boden. Diese Arbeit ist ein Beispiel für viele Sarkophage aus der Mitte des 2. und dem frühen 3. Jahrhundert, die als Thema eine Schlacht zeigen. |
