Title
English: Lowman Building and Lowman & Hanford, ca. 1921
Description
English: In 1882, James Lowman and Clarence Hanford joined forces to found Lowman & Hanford Stationery and Printing Company. They reopened in a tarpaper shack after losing their business in the Great Fire of 1889. In the early 1900s, they expanded their line and sold cameras, film, maps, books, gold scales, snow glasses and other supplies to people leaving for the Nome gold fields.

In this photo, taken about 1921, the large, gabled Lowman Building stands on the corner of First Avenue and Cherry Street, next to Lowman & Hanford's smaller First Avenue store. The corner building still stands.
