Title
Lower Palaeolithic handaxe
Description
English: A fairly large flint Acheulian handaxe of stained white-grey flint dating to the Lower Palaeolithic. It is of an elongated pointed form, approaching the ficron form without truly attaining it; the transition from the butt to the blade is gradual, both in terms of the object narrowing and thinning. The object has fairly straight, slightly battered edges. It is covered by removals which have been somewhat smoothed by water action. The butt end is fairly rounded, thick and fairly symmetrical. There is a rather deep loss on one face perhaps due to a flaw in the flint. On the opposite side of the other face small patch of cortex has been allowed to remain. Large areas of white patination have been stained orange by iron, with some areas of underlying dark grey showing through in places.
