Title |
Lower Palaeolithic handaxe |
||
Description |
English: An Acheulian handaxe of stained light grey flint dating to the Lower Palaeolithic. It is broadly cordate in form, although not fully symmetrical. The butt end is broadly squared off; the sides then expand to a waist before tapering to a slightly, but unequally, rounded tip. The thickest parts of the axe are above and below the 'waist', with high points adjacent to deep removals to aid holding. On one edge of the axe a patch of cortex has been left. The axe is otherwise covered with removals, most from the edge towards the centre. On one side of the axe is a substantial void around and below the waist. The object has a shallow S-shaped profile. The axe has been stained different shades of orange, with darker areas of the flint going brown. Removals towards the tip reveal a light grey flint. It is unclear how ancient these removals are as they seem consistent with the formation of sharp edges at the tip. |
