Title
Lower Palaeolithic, Acheulean, bifaced ovate flint hand axe
Description
English: A near complete Lower Palaeolithic, Acheulean, bifaced flint hand axe dating c. 500000-190000 BC. The axe is pointed-oval in form and planoconvex in profile and cross-section. The point is slightly narrower than the butt, with the thickest section about two thirds of the way along the body. Each face is covered in shallow flake removal scars with some evidence for more precise retouching on some of the upper edges. The lower edges have been bluntly retouched. The surface is covered by re-formed cortex which has a mid-orange patina due to iron staining, with paler areas in denser cortextual areas. There appears to be some damage to the butt end of the dorsal surface.

The hand axe measures 97mm in length, 58mm in maximum width and 31mm in maximum thickness. It weighs approximately 140 grams.
