Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Boyle Formation consists principally of cherty limestones / dolostones (= ~upper two-thirds of the photo). Some chert nodules are cored by visible sponge fossils. Impure dolostones and shale disconformably occur below the cherty carbonate interval (= lower part of the picture). A couple bone beds with placoderm fossils occur in the lower Boyle - the Kiddville Bone Bed and the Beechwood Bone Bed. A shale interval with chertified Ambocoelia brachiopods also occurs in the lower Boyle here.

Stratigraphy: Casey Member & lower Boyle Formation, Givetian Stage, upper Middle Devonian

Locality: eastern end of a roadcut on the northern side of Route 52, across the road from Emmanuel Baptist Church (now Grayson Funeral Home), ~3.5 miles east of Estill County line, ~6 miles west of Irvine, western Estill County, east-central Kentucky, USA (37˚ 42’ 11.12" North latitude, 84˚ 02’ 01.25" West longitude)
