Title |
Lowbury style brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy 'Lowbury' style brooch dating to the first century AD. Mackreth's (2011) Class 2c, with no. 4014 being an exact parallel. The brooch is missing only the tip of the pin and is otherwise complete with a nice patina. Down either outer edge of the bow of the brooch are paired rows of punched squares. The parallel illustrated in Mackreth was found in levels at Wroxeter and is dated to after AD 55 / 60. Lowbury brooches appear to have gone out of use by AD 80. Although they may date to the Roman period chronologically, they are a distinctively Iron Age brooch and are associated with the Atrebates, with their distribution largely contained to Hampshire, Berkshire and South Oxfordshire and the immediate vicinity. |
