Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The austral winter season has just ended in New Zealand. According to the National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), it was the warmest winter on record, with temperatures more than 1.2°C above average in several regions. Moreover, the season was especially wet and most of the country experienced higher-than-average rainfall. These climatic conditions have affected some of New Zealand’s landscapes and tourism infrastructure, such as the ski resorts located on Mount Ruapheu, which have been forced to close earlier than usual because of the extremely limited snow cover in the area. The lack of snow on Mount Ruapheu is visible when comparing these two images, acquired by Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 12 October 2021 and 7 October 2022. Copernicus Sentinel satellites provide free and open data that is used to monitor snow cover, an important driver of many climatic, environmental and economic processes worldwide.
