Description

Louis Moholo-Moholo is een van de grote drummers van de jazz, de pionier van de vrije improvisatie en tegelijkertijd stuwend als geen ander en direct herkenbaar. Sinds 2005 woont hij weer in zijn geboorteland Zuid-Afrika, na decennialang in Londen te hebben gewoond. In Five Blokes speelt hij met aanjagers van de nieuwe Britse jazz onder wie saxofonist Shabaka Hutchings (Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming) en pianist Alexander Hawkins, die eerder samenwerkte met Mulatu Astatke en Joe McPhee.

Louis Moholo (de verdubbeling van zijn naam kwam later pas) maakte furore in Europa nadat hij in 1964 naar Londen trok met het legendarische Blue Notes. Deze band gaf een nieuwe impuls aan de jazz- en improvisatiemuziek door invloeden van pakkende songs uit de Zuid-Afrikaanse townships. Moholo was vaak te horen in het BIMHUIS, ook met Amsterdammers als Sean Bergin en de musici van ICP.
