Description |
English: Portrait of Louis Alexandre, Count of Toulouse (1678-1737), son of Louis XIV of France and Madame de Montespan. "This enamel was identified as the comte de Toulouse when it was first recorded in the Royal Collection in an inventory of c. 1837. This identification is confirmed by comparison with the portrait of the comte de Toulouse by an anonymous artist of the French School at Versailles. Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse, was the third son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. He was declared legitimate in 1681, made Admiral of France in 1683 and installed as Admiral in 1694. He was awarded the Golden Fleece in 1704 by Philip V of Spain in recompense for his part in the Battle of Velez-Malaga against the English." |
