Summary

[edit]
Description Lot-8235-9: Civil War: Sinking of the Alabama, June 19th, 1864. USS Kearsarge, commanded by J.A. Winslow, sank CSS Alabama, Captain R. Semmes, off Cherbourg, France, ending the career of the South’s most famous commerce raider. The engagement lasted an hour and ten minutes. During her career, Alabama had captured and burned 55 vessels at sea, which were valued at $4.5 million and bonded 10 others for more than half a million dollars. After Captain Semmes was rescued by the British private yacht Deerhound, it caused an international dispute between the United States and Great Britain. Published by Werner Company, Akron, Ohio.
