Description Lot-741-2: U.S. Coast Guard, WWII. Coast Guardsmen Learn to Swim For Lives. Coast Guardsmen Walter W. Gawtry keeps his chin-up on his trousers. Member of a Coast Guard class in functional swimming. He is taught how to keep afloat if forced to abandon ship without a life jacket. The Coast Guardsman has turned his trousers into a pair of water wings. The legs are secured and the trousers inflated by air forced through the waist when swung over head.
