Description Lot-741-1: U.S. Coast Guard, WWII. Coast Guardsmen Learn to Swim For Lives. If you dive over the side to save a life a good thing to know is the “hand tow.” Coast Guardsmen are taught this method of avoiding the death grip of a tired, panicky, possibly injured swimmer in a functional swimming course at Miami, Florida.
