Summary
[edit]DescriptionLos Arapiles 22 July 1812.jpg |
English: The monument commemorates the significant Battle of Los Arapiles of July 22, 1812 won by the Anglo-Luso-Germano-Spanish Army led by Arthur Wellesley, over the napoléonic troops (French troops supplemented by contingents supplied by the countries submitted to the napoléonic régime).
The newspaper El Adelanto published five photos of the event and reported it in these words, the whole filling up a full page : The plaque, having later lamentably succumbed to an act of vandalism, was replaced by a simple white marble plaque, reading : ARAPILES. 22 julio 1812. Still later, on the occasion of the bi-centenary of the Victory of Arapiles, 2012, a black marble plaque was affixed at the foot of the obelisk (<► File:Los_Arapiles_22_July_1812_-_Plaque_2012.jpg). It already bears, between the M and the B, the mark of yet another act of vandalism. |

The name of Arapiles is perpetuated by several places, some as far flung as Mount Arapiles, Australia, named in 1836 by Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (later explorer) who fought at the Battle of Salamanca : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Arapiles.
