Description

Lord Durham, the Governor-General of the British provinces in North America, sits beside E. Ellice on a ship as Turton vomits over the side. Coloured lithograph by H.B. (John Doyle), 1838.

The rough voyage from Canada returning to England alludes to the rough treatment given to Durham for his disastrous handling of Canadian affairs in Parliament.

Edward Ellice, the younger (1810–1880); John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, the Governor-General of the British provinces in North America, Thomas Edward Michell Turton, 2nd Baronet (1790–1854) Legal Advisor to Lord Durham, British North America 1838.

On 1 November 1838 he sailed on the Inconstant, reaching Plymouth on 26 November and London on 7 December.
