Description

Lophophyllidium sp. - fossil rugose coral in limestone from the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA.

This is a solitary rugose coral from the Lower Mercer Limestone, a widespread, laterally-persistent marine fossiliferous limestone unit in the Pottsville Group of eastern Ohio. Rugose corals, or "horn corals" are an extinct group of marine invertebrates. Some rugosans were colonial, but most of them were solitary (as is the individual shown above), with a calcitic skeleton that tapered to a point. The pointed end was in the seafloor sediments. A sea anemone-type organism (polyp) originally occupied the cup's living space at top. Coral polyps have numerous tentacles with stinging cells (nematocysts) that paralyze prey. Many corals have photosynthesizing microbes (zooxanthellae) living symbiotically within their tissues.
