Title
Looped palstave, Capel Curig
Description
English: Looped bronze palstave with some extant damage and in worn condition.

The blade is plain and slightly flared. The cutting edge is curved and the blade is a pointed oval shape in cross-section. The u-shaped stop ridge is angular and pronounced. The sides run parallel between the squared butt and the stop ridge. The septum is long in relation to the blade, compared to similar palstaves.

The palstave is complete, although the butt has been damaged and the stop ridge has been worn down, particularly on one side. The surface of the palstave is pitted and small air bubbles are visible in the worn areas. There has recently been a chip knocked off the edge of the blade and the surface patina is black, green and white in colour. It was cast-in-one and the junction of the moulds used in casting is evident on each side, and particularly around the loop.

This palstave appears to be of Llangefni type, which is plain, and typical of Ynys Môn and Caernarfonshire (Lodwick, Pers. Comm., 2005). It can be identified as a late palstave belonging to the Wilberton phase, also known as Needham’s period 6 (1150-950 BC), due to the way in which the flanges run into the septum before the butt, and the presence of a thick septum similar to the palstave found at Maentwrog (ibid.), although this example has a squared stop-ridge.

Similar examples were found as part of the Guilsfield Hoard (Savory 1980, fig 32 no 268-2) and at Maentwrog (ibid., fig 24, no 178).
