| Description |
English: This is certainly an interesting building from the outside as well as the inside. The Capitol Hill Blog has a great post on the history of the building -- to summarize, it was built as a public market space, before spending a lot of time as various grocery stores, including Safeway in the 1950s, which switched over to a full-size Fred Meyer in the 70s. In the 80s, it was redeveloped to more or less its current condition, except with a mall-like section in the front (as seen in the pictures I've linked earlier), and the Fred Meyer shrunk down to the split-level section in the back. Finally, in 2004, it was remodeled to its current state, with QFC moving from its old building across the street to merge with the Fred Meyer in the Broadway Market building. (Certainly much more history here than I'm used to finding!) |
