Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Looking east from E. 70th Street down the railroad tracks of the CSX Erie West line, which runs along the shore of Lake Erie from Erie, Pennsylvania, to the Cleveland Terminal near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio.

The track from Erie to the Pennsylvania-Ohio border was built by the Franklin Canal Company Railroad from 1850 to 1852. The Cleveland, Painesville & Ashtabula Railroad (CP&A) constructed its track from Cleveland to the state line about the same time. The CP&A bought the Franklin Canal Company in 1854.

The CP&A leased the Cleveland & Toledo Railroad in 1867 and changed its name to the Lake Shore Railway in March 1868. Just 13 months later, it merged with the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad to form the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway (LS&MS).

The LS&MS merged with the New York Central in 1914. The New York Central merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 to form the Penn Central. The Penn Central went bankrupt in 1970. Conrail was formed to take over most freight railroads in America in 1976, and the track given to Conrail.

In 1998, most of Conrail's assets were split between CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. The line east of Cleveland went to CSX.
