Summary

[edit]
Description Looff Carousel and Roller Coaster on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, a national landmark (1924). The carousel was built in 1911. It features a brass ring dispenser, which riders can then take and toss at a target (a painting of a clown). It is one of five Looff carousels left in the United States. The Giant Dipper opened on May 17, 1924. It reaches a height of 70 ft and can reach 55 miles per hour. The coaster was designed by Fred Church, who also designed the landmark Giant Dipper in Belmont Park, NY. It still annually ranks among the 50 greatest wooden roller coasters.
