Summary
DescriptionLongford St. Mel's Cathedral The Way of the Cross by Ken Thompson 01 2019 08 22.jpg |
St. Mel's Cathedral, Longford, County Longford, Ireland English: First station of the Cross where Jesus is condemed to death, bas-relief sculpture carved by the Cork sculptor Ken Thompson from Bath stone panels, 55 × 46 inches and 3½ inches thick, with its background painted in blue, the halos gilded, and the classical Roman lettering set in terracotta. The inscription “What is truth?” quotes the question by Pilatus (John 19:38). In addition, “Truth” is set below Jesus in reference to “I am the way, the truth and the life”. (See Colm O'Reilly, The Way of the Cross – A journey with images and words of scripture carved in stone, St. Mel's Cathedral, Longford; Mary Leland, Is that a mouse in the Stations of the Cross?, Irish Times, 8 July 2014.) |
