The abandoned Grader Cheese CoolStores of Patea. In the 1920's Patea was the largest cheese exporting port in the world. The Grader Cool Store received cheese from all over South Taranaki as as far south as Oroua Downs bear Himatangi. After grading it was loaded into coastal ships at the grader wharf for transport to Wellington where it was transhipped into overseas ships for export. The port closed in July 1959. The Coolstores complex was later used for storing Grain in the end building on the top left of image. The Patea Freezing Works Volunteer Fire Brigade used the buildings for training. The Patea Freezing Works closed in 1982. |
