Summary

[edit]
Description

Short and long-tailed weasels are brown in summer and white in winter to camouflage from both their predators and their prey. They primarily hunt for rodents, but are strong enough to take down a rabbit. Occasionally, they enter the dunes to look for kangaroo rats. In turn, they are hunted by most raptors. The black tip on their tail serves as a decoy, causing the hawk to aim for it, missing the main part of the weasel's body and allowing it to escape. Weasels are most often seen along the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
