The instrument (for so it may bestyled) upon which the male cricket plays(the female is mute) consists of strong ner-vures or rough strings in the wing-cases, bythe friction of which against each other asound is produced and communicated to themembranes sti-etched between them, in thesame manner as the vibrations caused by thefriction of the finger upon the tambourine aredifiused over its surface. This was fastened together by onebutton in front, all the other button-holeshaving been burst through. Protmchng fromhis bosom, a corner of the pandean pipes wasjust -\-isible, and as he told me the story of hisadventures, he kept plajing with the band ofhis very Ump and very nasty old beaver hat.He had fonnerly been a gentlemans servant,and was especially civil in his manners.
