Summary
[edit]DescriptionLondon Transport towing vehicle 738J (AGX 520), Cobham bus museum running day, 25 August 2008.jpg |
English: London Transport towing vehicle 738J (reg. AGX 520), pictured at the Cobham Bus Museum. Originally a 1933 built STL class double-decker London bus (AEC Regent I, No. STL169), in 1950 it was stripped down to its chassis by Aldenham Works and sent to Chalmers of Redhill, who re-bodied it as a breakdown tender. It re-entered service with the number 738J. It saw use as a tender for nearly 20 years, based at various LT bus depots and also the Lillie Bridge Depot of the Underground (for the Signals department), before being delicensed in 1969 while at Lillie Bridge, displaced by 1416LD. Sold into preservation in 1971, it's now part of the London Bus Preservation Trust's collection. It has twice been heavily rebuilt - once after a WWII flying bomb explosion in February 1944 while still a bus, and again while in preservation after an arson attack, which saw it off the road for many years, not re-emerging until 2002. |
