Description
English: Lombard grave goods and urn fragments from Marmstorf
  • Hamburg-Marmstorf, Hamburg, Germany

The urn grave field at Marmstorf dates to the older Roman imperial era. The dead were burned along with grave goods on a funeral pyre, after which their ashes and parts of the goods were interred in a ceramic vessels used as an urns. The urns were then set in grave shafts with additional goods situated around them. Weapons were often intentionally made unusable prior to burial. Especially because of the prevalence of weapons as grave goods, the Marmstorf grave field is regarded as typically Lombard.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Archaeological Museum Hamburg, Germany.
Deutsch: Langobardische Grabbeigaben und Urnenfragmente aus Marmstorf
  • Landkreis Harburg (Hansestadt Hamburg), Deutschland
