Description
English: Relief from the grave field of Santo Stefano in Pertica
  • Cividale del Friuli, Province Udine, Region Friuli-Venèzia-Giùlia, Italy

The necropolis derives its name from the ancient priory Santo Stefano, dissolved in 1772. In old reports, the field names "la pertica" (the posts) or "cimitero di Attila" (Attila's cemetery) are attached to the priory's landholdings. According to the information passed down by Paulus Diaconus (V, 34; VI, 55), Lombard graves, in contrast to the Christian graves of the Roman population, were marked not with gravestones, but with upright posts topped with wooden doves. Both field names could point to the Lombard burial site.

The graves, 43 in all, were arranged in four rows. The burial sites were marked in various forms.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Museo archeologico nazionale di Cividale del Friuli.
Deutsch: Relief vom Gräberfeld von Santo Stefano in Pertica
  • Cividale del Friuli, Provinz Udine, Region Friuli-Venèzia-Giùlia, Italien
