Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lombard burial Urns from the grave field von of Kostelec na Hané
  • District of Prostějov, North Moravia, Czech Republic

Up to now, 437 burials from this gravefield have been studied. The dead were burned on a funeral pyre and interred in urns. Numerous outfit remnants as well as the decoration of the ceramic vessels evidence parallels to Elbe Germanic finds from the Prignitz, Mecklenburg, and Holstein. Even such inconspicuous grave goods as so-called urn resin, the use of which is documented beginning in the 2nd–3rd centuries, is regarded as typically Elbe Germanic. Urn resin is pitch from birch trees that exuded a pleasant fragrance and was probably of significance in the context of cult activities.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Muzeum Prostějovska v Prostějově příspěvková organizace, Prostějov; Vlastivědné Muzeum, Olomouc.
