Summary

[edit]
Description Introduced cool-season annual tufted C3 grass; stems are few in number, rigid and to 25 cm tall. Flowerheads are erect spikes 5-16 cm long. Spikelets are 3-7-flowered, about 1.5 mm wide and are embedded in the thick rigid stem; lower glume is absent; upper glume is roughly equal to the spikelet’s length; lemmas are unawned or have a 1-2 mm long awn. Flowers from spring to mid-summer. A native of Europe, it occurs on roadsides, in crops and native and naturalised pastures; usually on sandier soils. A minor weed of crops. Of no grazing value as it is uncommon in pastures and has low productivity.
