Description |
English: Caption on image: 11 PH Coll 516.4063 The Smith-Powers Logging Company was established in the early twentieth century in Coos County, Oregon. The town of Powers was named for Albert H. Powers in 1914. Powers served as the vice president and general manager of the Smith-Powers Logging Company, which served as a subsidiary to the C.A. Smith Lumber Company. Powers was born in 1861 in Ontario and moved to Marshfield (later to become known as Coos Bay) in 1907. He was a prominent figure in the Pacific Northwest lumber industry and was often referred to as "Uncle Al." He was active as head of the company from approximately 1907 to 1928. He died in 1930 in an automobile accident in Indio, California. The Smith-Powers Logging Company would eventually merge with the Coos Bay Lumber Company, which would later become part of the Georgia Pacific Corporation.
