US military serial 26-431 The Loening OL was a single-engined amphibian which first flew in 1923. 165 were built and served with the United States Army, Navy and Coast Guard. This is the sole surviving example and is an OA-1A built for the US Army. It was one of five of the type which took part in the Pan American Goodwill flight of 1926-1927, visiting Mexico, Central and South America. The flight covered 22,000 miles and took 133 days, with ‘San Francisco’ being crewed by Captain Ira C.Eaker as pilot and First Lieutenant Muir S.Fairchild as co-pilot. It was donated to the Smithsonian Institute in December 1927 and was restored in 1965. It is seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
