Fours Fast Run. Some time ago we made mention of aparticularly fast run over the Cleveland,Columbus, Cincinnati & St. Louis, andnow, through the kindness of Mr. Thco.C. Becke, of St. Louis, we are able toshow an illustration of the engine thatmade the fastest run, taken from a photo-graph which he sent us. (Trade Mark Rcgl»t<r<«I.J ^nd Rolling Stock- NEW YORK, JULY, 1897. miles. The run from Indianapolis toCleveland, 283 miles, was made by eight-wheel engines having cylinders (8 x 24inches, driving wheels 62 inches diameter,and 1,600 square feet of heating surface. The entire run of 545 miles was coveredin II hours 18 minutes. With delay-- inactual stops deducted, the time used inrunning was 0 hours 55 minutes. From No. 7. Rue, 37-10 miles in 3 minutes, or 74miles per hour; Wellington to Grafton,11 1-5 miles in g/2 minutes, or 69.7 milesper hour. The engine shown performedthis unusual high-speed feat. The train carried the Geisha OperaCompany, and consisted of five cars,weighing 351,000 pounds, exclusive ofpassengers and baggage. Eight-wheelengines, with cylinders 18^2 x 24 inches,driving wheels 68 inches diameter, andboih-r giving 1,725.6 square feet of heat-ing surface, pulled the train from St.Louis to Indianapolis, a distance of 262 BIG FOUR RECORD BREAKER. that it will be >een that the 545 miles wererun in 595 minutes, an average of 55.3Smiles per hour. The greatest speed was attained betweenMitchell and Comstock. on St. Louisdivision, 3 2-10 miles in 2.4 minut76.3 miles per hour: Gays to Mattoon. 12miles in io minutes, or 72 miles per hour.On Cleveland division—Marchs to La Company, of Xew York, after the designsof Mr. Geo.
