Text Appearing Before Image:
lso American, in the shape ofMr. W. F. Dixon, the chief engineer otthe locomotive department of the greatworks at Sormovo. The lower view shows the power used,in the shape of a man-propelled capstan, which does the work when you getenough men at it. These views also givean idea of the construction of the build-ings, which are evidently well lighted. The middle view shows the samemethod being employed to put the boiler-house stack into position, it being placedin two pieces and afterwards joined. The photographs were taken and sentto us by Mr. Henry H. Stevens, son ofthe general foreman, and we hope to haveother views showing the progress of loco-motive building in Russia from time totime. ® ft ft Both American and European capitalhave been secured to build a 45-mile rail-way between Puerto Plata and Santiago,in the Dominican Republic. While thisseems rather insignificant to us, 45 milesmeans considerable to an island like SanDomingo, particularly when it runs cross-wise of the island.
