Any and all mechanical appli-ances are insufficient to prevent smoke ifthe air supply is not exactly right, whilethe ordinary plain grate works admirablywith intelligent firing. His device was ap-plied to the furnaces of various factoriesin a large Scotch manufacturing town, with the result that smoke was entirelyprevented, except a small puff that wouldcome out during the time of firing. Theinvention was so simple that it was easilymanaged by firemen, and was rather anaid than otherwise to them in doing thework. Very careful tests were made of itby certain intelligent engineers, and theyreported that the smoke preventer was en-tirely satisfactory, except that it increasedthe consumption of coal 7 or 8 per cent.
