thegreat fault of the shop is that it is nothigh enough to put in overhead travelingcranes. As they are turning out aboutone engine a day, the expense of jackingup engines is very serious compared withwhat it would be to lift by cranes. A curious thing about the shops, whichis no doubt an inheritance from the timewhen practices were established withoutthe guidance of experience, is that theyuse no pits, but raise the engines highenough from the floor level to do workbelow. I understand that among im-provements contemplated are the raisingof the roof to admit of traveling cranesand the putting-in of repair pits. Thewhole of this building is now devoted tothe repairing of locomotives and to thetools used for doing the work. As theygenerally have about sixty engines in atone time, it takes a good deal of room toaccommodate them. The engines standcrosswise of the shop in two rows, andhave the transfer between them. The ar-rangement is compact, and is as good as 308 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING.
Text Appearing After Image:
any plan I have seen foi a shop holdingso many engines. The tools are set atone side of the building, and are groupedto finish particular jobs with the leastpossible moving. _ There have been num-erous changes made in the arrangementof tools since Mr. E. E. Davis, the pres-ent shop manager, took charge. Forinstance, in the part of the shop devotedto wheel work we find a hydrostatic press,driving-wheel lathes, key-seat millingmachine and crank-pin lathe, all set sothat thoy can be reached by one crane. When a set of wheels leaves this groupof tools, it is ready to go under the en-gine. The cylinders come direct from thefoundry to a group of tools suitable foithe work to be done. A crane lifts it onto a boring and facing machine, and, after the preliminary operations are fin-ished, swings it on to a planer. A manthen docs the laying-out; and after theplaning is done, the crane takes holdagain and puts it upon a special form ofshaper made by Bement & Miles, wherethe ports are planed. T
