be regretted, asthere was every indication of a most ated at Swindon in Wiltshire, about 7/54miles from London. They are said tobe next to Crewe* in size, covering anarea of 208 acres. These works werecommenced in 1842, and since that datethey have been considerably added to tillthey have reached the present large dimen-sions. Among the principal things turnedout now at these works are locomotives,carriages, trucks and wagons, there beingalso gas works, grease works, masonsyard, brick fields, rolling mills, etc., etc.The locomotive works proper comprisetwenty-five shops, besides two rollingmills and the steam-hammer buildings. The R shop, of which an illustrationis here given, measures 246 x 161 feet andconsists of three bays, the roofs beingsupported on light cast-iron columns. Infact, this is the style of building through- •At Crewe there are only rail, steel and loco-motive works, so that only the size of the locomo-tive departments are here compared. 744 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING.
