Summary

[edit]
Description

The Lockheed 5B Vega piloted by Amelia Earhart, on display in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

It was designed in 1927 by John Knudsen Northrop and Gerrard Vultee. The fuselage was two plywood forms stretched over wooden ribs. The wings were cantilevered over the body to eliminate struts that would pierce the body and weaken it. Its engine was a Pratt & Whitney Wasp R1340C.

The 5B was a seven-seat passenger.

Amelia Earhart flew across the Atlantic Ocean solo in this plane, becoming the first woman to do so. She departed Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, on May 20, 1932. After 14 hours and 56 minutes, she landed Culmore, north of Derry, Northern Ireland.
