Det ligger troligen i detta flamsk-holländska drag en reaktion mot det uppstyltade och korrekta,ett slags folklig förargelse mot de seder, som trjxkte och häm-made naturdrifterna. Många af Frans Hals taflor af flinande flickor och rökandegubbar har det karikaturala draget starkt framhäfdt. Iblandupptäcker man i Gerhard Honthorsts (1590—1656) genretaflortydliga anknytningar till äldre skämtmotiv. Hans Tandläkare iDresdens museum påminner om Lucas van Leydens komiska 66 SKÄMTBILDER UNDER 1600-TALET.
