Notes
Description from the Ambrosiana site (translated in english)
This canvas portrays in full scale two little girls who were locked out of school: they are Maria and Centa Rossi, the daughters of the lady who took care of the cleaning of the painter's linen. The work was exhibited at the Brera Academy in 1888 and marks the painter's turn towards a more markedly social interest in his artistic production. The psychological yield is truly remarkable: if for the little girl being locked out of school and being able to skip classes is a cause for joy, on the face of her older sister, who is now facing the first responsibilities of life, we can read the concern for her consequences that the delay will entail.
