Summary
[edit]DescriptionLock 57 C and O from NPS.jpg |
English: Lock 57. NPS site says: Lock 57, built between 1838 and 1839 of soft gray limestone, has an 8’ lift and is built to the specifications of 1836. It was not watered until 1850. Sometime after 1880, from mid-lock to the upper wingwall on the towpath side, the stones from the top half of the lock wall were removed and it was rebuilt. Some of the original stones were used in the reconstruction and the rest were left on the riverside of the towpath near the lockhouse. In addition, concrete was added to reinforce the corner of the upper gate pocket and a 10” curb of concrete was added above the coping stones. The date 1919 is scratched into this curb. |
