Description

Loches (Indre-et-Loire)

Le Donjon (XIe siècle).

C'est l'un des donjons les plus imposants de son époque en Europe.

Haut de 36 mètres, le Donjon de Loches a été érigé, entre 1013 et 1035, pour le comte d'Anjou Foulques Nerra. Foulques (987-1040) meurt à Metz, mais il sera enterré dans l'abbaye de Beaulieu-lès-Loches qu'il a fondée (Un crâne et quelques ossement découverts en 1870 seront attribués à Foulques III d'Anjou, mais une expertise menée en 2007 contredit cette affirmation).

Le donjon sera entouré d'une "chemise" (un mur d'enceinte) vers 1140.

Le donjon est transformé en prison royale par Louis XI au XVe siècle. Le donjon servira de prison jusqu'en 1926.
