Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Western stained glass window in the Locherer Family Chapel in the Freiburg Minster, donated by the cleric Nikolaus Locherer and his relatives in 1520. Copy by Fritz Geiges made ca. 1920 after the original, which was made in Freiburg based on designs presumably by Hans Baldung and is kept today in Freiburg's Augustinermuseum.

The left field shows St. John the Evangelist sitting under a tree before a mountainous landscape. He is gazing upward to a vision of the Madonna on the crescent in a wreath of clouds. Before him lies the Gospel of John, on which an eagle sits as his symbol. John is holding a quill in his hand and has a book in his lap -- the Book of Revelation, which he is said to have written on Patmos. This scene depicts the saint's vision described in chapter 12 of the Apocalypse, the last book of the New Testament.

The right field shows St. Martin with a sword on a white horse. Below him crouches a half-clothed beggar, the stumps of legs wrapped in blue cloth. This portrayal shows a scene of his legend: Martin, a former Roman soldier who became a missionary after his conversion and later bishop of Tours, is said to have encountered a freezing beggar before the gates of Amiens and to have used his sword to cut off half of his cape to give to him.
