Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The yoga-like posture in which this Lobster moth (Stauropus sp.) caterpillar is sitting can give rise to various assumptions about this weird behaviour. With its sinister alien look, the caterpillar is one of the many wonders of evolution. Upon getting disturbed the larvae have two tricks in their bags; one is to take up this position and remain still, so as to avoid suspicion. Second, to move their modified prolegs rapidly and mimic an ant’s antennae. This particular individual was found feeding on Pithecellobium dulce (English tamarind), near Hulimavu lake in Bangalore.
